Research interests

Search and isolation of new lead compounds with pharmaceutical, agrochemical, nutraceutical and cosmetic interest from natural sources (plants, marine organism, fungi, and microorganisms) from Greek, Mediterranean, as well as worldwide biodiversity.

Natural products structure determination using modern NMR techniques, Mass spectrometry and Molecular Modeling; metabonomics, proteomics evaluation of natural products

Drug Discovery: Design and synthesis of new molecules with pharmacological interest (antitumor, antiviral, antibiotics, estrogen/antiestrogen, kinase inhibitors); structure-activity relationships Treatment of agricultural wastes for the large scale production of high added value natural products -Essential oils, volatile, flavor and aroma constituents

Τhe laboratory of Pr. Skaltsounis today has a state-of-the-art infrastructure for natural products research. Particular emphasis has been placed on facilemanagement of large sample numbers, on automation, parallelization of sample processing, and miniaturization.

The prominent role of the laboratory of Pr. Skaltsounis in the field on Natural Product has been recognized by the international scientific community, who assigned to him the organization of 7th Joint Meeting, the most important scientific event on natural product chemistry and biology, organised by the American & European scientific societies, taking place every 4 years.

This meeting dealing natural products with pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic and agrochemical interest was organized by Prof. Skaltsoumis team in Athens, Greece during 3-8 August 2008 with the participation of more than 1300 researchers from 80 countries. Professor Skaltsounis has also organised two other international meetings in 2002 and 2006 and has participated in the organizing and/or scientific committee of other 12 international meetings.

Moreover since January of 2010 he is member of the French Academy of Pharmacy and member of the advisory board of two distinguished European Scientific Societies dealing with Natural Products.
